The work of the Competence Center of Toxicology and Molecular Medicine focuses on determining the exposure to hazardous substances by using human biomonitoring and on mechanistic studies of the effect of hazardous substances at the cellular level by using effect monitoring. Based on these studies, suitable preventive measures for diseases caused by hazardous substances can be derived.
The focus of research and services is on diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs as well as the urogenital tract, including their early detection using molecular biological methods (molecular medicine). In particular, after exposure to asbestos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic amines, diisocyanates and metals. But scientific work and counseling also focuses on exposure to hazardous substances that affect the endocrine and nervous systems, such as plasticizers, pesticides and solvents. Finally, research on UV-associated skin cancers rounds off the portfolio.
