At the IFA, we not only focused our studies on ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure in occupational scenarios, i.e., covered by occupational accident insurance. We also conducted measurements specifically tailored to establish the level of UV radiation exposure during a range of activities performed during leisure time. The results are intended to yield a complete overview of the population’s exposure to solar UV radiation. Both measurements were performed in multiple campaigns using the GENESIS-UV measurement system.

What is the purpose of these campaigns?

Skin cancer has become a widespread disease in recent years. The incidence has been rising steadily. However, the starting point for prevention is knowledge of exposure levels and situations. Since 2014, we have therefore been collecting data in an occupational context; to date, over 200 occupational profiles have been documented and measured. Results can and will support the prevention efforts against non-melanoma skin cancer. However, with the lifetime UV dose as the main risk factor, prevention measures must also cover periods outside working hours. We are therefore now extending our efforts to include non-occupational areas of life.

What have we achieved so far?

In 2020 and 2021, we conducted measurements during twelve different activities, including "cycling" and "walking the dog". Over 600 volunteers in total took part. The results are currently being analysed, after which they will be published. A pilot project was conducted in 2018 and 2019 in which UV exposure during soccer matches was measured. We were also on site for a few days at the 2019 Federal Horticultural Show in Heilbronn: we provided 15 guests there with UV measuring instruments in order to obtain a particularly good assessment of UV exposure during the show.
