Skin tolerability of waterbased metalworking-fluids and their additives

Project No. IPA 208

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

The risk of skin diseases among employees exposed to metalworking fluids (MWF) is up to three times higher than for the general working population. The occurrence of irritation-related (irritant) contact eczema is observed particularly in occupations with contact to waterbased MWF (w-MWF).

The project seeks to determine the optimal method for identifying and classifying w-MWF with the highest irritation potential.

Activities/Methods:

  • Development of standardized testing procedures using bioengineering methods
  • Categorization and irritant ranking of the most frequently used w-MWF Further analysis and
  • Characterization of w-MWF with the highest irritant potential in order to identify irritative additive mixes and components
